82 quality pictures of things: A friend of mine asked me to take picture of the United Steel Workers building. I took a bunch, and this is the one he chose. He then published it in Xinhua, the biggest Chinese newspaper!... Failing, as usually, miserably at hula hooping.... Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google.... Yes, we should cover up statues before the G20. Anarchists totally HATE statues.... Boarding up windows does make more sense though.... The first troop.... At the edge of the Carnegie Mellon campus, the hill overlooking Phipps Conservatory, the location of the opening dinner of the G20, was completey fenced off.... Somebody important arrives, I assure you.... Another important person.... Another important person for sure.... G20 parking lot.... 15 protestors, 300 on-looking college students, and 200 riot cops.... These guys were seriously SCARED!... Sonic canon zooms by. The ended up whipping it out on those 15 protestors and 300 onlookers, as well as pepper spray.... The governer of Pennsylvania randomly gives a press conference downstairs.... That's Ben, my housemate. He makes robotic wheelchairs.... Well, he's certainly not about to outrun anybody.... I hope the taxpayer was paying them overtime.... Ratio of riot police to protestors in downtown Pittsburgh was roughly 40 to 1. No. Joke.... These guys were letting people look in their crazy SWAT tank thing and not treating citizens as potential protestors / terrorists. (This made them fairlyunique.)... Not quite sure.... This was basically all of the protestors.... So the night before my friends and I were joking about how the protestors were clearly trying hard to figure out exactly WHAT to protest, so they might as well pick baby seal clubbing. And then today, this. Wow.... The main talks were at that convention center across the river. This is my officemate Gabriel posing with the high security.... Not quite sure why they had to close off the point....

97 quality pictures of things: The view from Peter's friend's fancy apartment building. I didn't even end up actually using the pool...... Lunch as recommended: muffuletta and a bag of chips on the banks of the Mississippi.... I big train came along behind me while I was eating my sammich, but I was able to hear it's whistle long before as it made its way through downtown first.... Train behind and freighter in front, yay transportation!... I had good timing: it started pouring only just after I went into a museum, and was done raining after I'd seen it all in there.... Louisiana has had even more flags flying over it than Texas.... This museum is in the original old administration building of the French, then the Spanish, then us Gringos.... Begnes. Yum.... The Cafxc3xa9 du Mond must go through about 3 tons of powdered sugar a day.... I liked the tiltiness of this place.... Cajun fried chicken and rabbit jumbalaya at Coop's Place, as per another excellent recommendation.... New Orleans, with the glaring exception of Bourbon Street, had amazing live music.... Rolling into Memphis, I found this rather amusing!... Big ol' barge pushin' things up the Mississippi in front of a setting sun.... I didn't feel like trying to hard to perfect this panorama stitch.... Wikitravel mentioned this place called Dyer's deep-fried hamburgers. Looked like a normal greasyburger to me, and the only noteworthy thing was its diminutive size as compared to price. I think its time to update wikitravel.... Trolley in.... Trolley out.... No trolley.... So what happened at the Loraine Motel?... Keeping up the infamous balcony.... Words from his final public speech.... You weren't allowed to take pictures in the Civil Rights Museum, but this was Rosa Parks' bus, and no one was looking!... To allow my father a bit of vicarious living I took a picture riding the trolley.... "The Blingdom." Hrrhm. Enough said....

But everyone else camped a quarter mile from those coordinates, so Ed and Heather's tent is being moved.... The were going against the wind.... More peeps come, the camp grows.... Straight chillin'!... Mike always looks good and you know it.... The sun hurts my photoreceptor, but Ed's stylin' makes it worthwhile.... Driving fast across the playa is pretty much required.... At Fandango, the big camp, they set up a big beacon to make it findable at night.... Bacon Blasters breakfast bonanza.... Being that it was the Fourth of July Lady Liberty here was unanimously deemed queen of the Playa.... Some kinda Stars Wars orgy truck it seems to me.... Yeah, it is a big truck,... That aeroplane came down for a landing, you'll see.... See. There it is. It's an aeroplane.... Qarly and Morley.... If you're in a place where it's totally inarguably OK to drive with a girl in your lap and a beer in your hand, I say you might as well just do it.... Qarly is qolorful!... I'd call that a pretty quintessential Playa moment right there.... Jared thought it looked like fun.... Camp gets packed up.... But he's straight chillin' nonetheless.... I would say that tent pole has seen better days.... It's called "Shirtcocking" and it's a generally frowned upon practice....

You can see the thing we just cut was like the thing on the other side of this thing. (And stuff.)... Suitable piece of beveled handle cut off, time to polish the ends.... Polishing the ends of the other thing too.... D'd'daah! Now to just get these two pieces of iron welded together...... Cupcake-mobile at my dad's friend's shop.... The inside of a cupcake-mobile.... He heated up the metal for a few minutes before welding anything.... Starting to weld. This picture taken through goggle lense.... Cooling it down the wet way.... Cleaning up the weld with a grinder.... And done! That's 25 pound of weights plus the t-bar itself is 8 pounds, so, almost exacltly one pood. Couldn't have worked out better.... Painting it for a small added degree of weather protection.... Incredible Hulk.... Sweet.... My deck gym. Got all those bars, the bench, and the weight set with rack for $150 off craigslist back in January.... My version of rings made from climbing rope I stole from my sister and some PVC pipe. Took me a few tries to get them tied to a good height and evenly to boot.... We got some heavy rubber matting to protect my parents' soft redwood deck from those times that I might drop 135 pounds of iron from almost eight feet up. It's turned out to be a very good idea!... Bald!... I'm up to dropping 175 lbs these days. w00t!... Yes, Mr. Kettle. And you are black....

38 quality pictures of things: We were going to go down over the mountian and back along the river. I took us down a wrong turn and so it was the down via the river instead since no one wanted to backtrack.... The first of many river crossings back-and-forth. Pretty soon we just gave up taking shoes off and got kept them on and wet.... Bear tracks.... Little elf people were walking on their hands here, apparently. (That or raccoons.)... After a grueling trudge down slippery river rocks, hungry quicksand pits, and through plently of thistle, here we are at the springs and with a strong consesus to take the proper trail over the mountain on the way back.... I we get cold we can burn that bowling pin.... The upper springs was not stoppered, so I gave it a scrub with the conveniently left-behind brush and stoppered it.... The insulating power of goose-down is great. When the sun came bearing down on us in the morning, it was actually cooler inside my bag than outside.... The wilderness is not so wild after all. Looks like the trowel will go unused.... The TOPO map showed some more hot springs up a ravine about couple miles down. This is what we found.... Looks like somebody had some kind of plans with that spring nonetheless.... This is hotspring water, but unfortunately this far from the source it's no longer hot, as this would be a pretty sweet place to build a tub.... I don't know.... A once-upon-a-cow.... Late afternoon soak.... Some people are less naked than others...... My camping stove was leaking and I was afraid of burning down the Eastern Sierras if it were, as it seemed astoundingly likely to do, explode in my face. This is plan C. (Plan B was to use someone else's stove as I had done the previous morning, but the other people camping nearby weren't up yet this morning.) Plan C is to put this pan with filtered water in it into the hotspring right by the source where it's probably at least 160F and see how much heat I can transfer. About ten minutes later I came back and the water was plenty hot for to brew some beans. And that, my friend, was my first cup of geothermal coffee!... Looks like a fun road to drive one's 4WD up.... Another hot spring pool a bit up the river. Strangely, the water wasn't particularly hot at all.... Following the jeep trail back over the mountain. That's Nevada in the not-too-distant distance.... More bears tracks.... Hella more bear tracks.... Yumm!... The little town of Markleeville and route 89 are down in that valley.... Adam loves you long time!...

We are to assume that said dentist has his degree from UCLA.... Everland! My students always talked about going here, Korea's biggest themepark. This is my first time.... Orienting ourselves for a day of adventure.... Begging me not to make her ride the biggest roller coaster with me. (Shinji is the world's biggest scaredy-cat.)... "It's ok," I said, "just wait in line with me. When we get to the ride you can turn around, I promise!"... I told her to stop looking up at the ride zooming around above us, it'll only make it worse.... Bipedal bear.... Their pen is far, far too small. At least that guy knows how to relax anyway.... It was hot that day, I'd be doing the same thing.... Because the traditional range of the Siberian Tiger extends into a sliver of North Korea, as far as the Koreans are concerned that makes it The Korean Tiger.... That aint just monkeys...... From "Chinese Taipei" this guy got almost the same cheers as mainland athletes. It is the same country, after all.... The coaches like to massage the athletes until right up to the platform. This guy on the big screen is from North Korea.... I want an olympic color-coded weight set.... We're at the Beijing University of Aeronautics gymnasium.... Oops.... I asked this guy in Mandarin "Duibuqi, ni keyi jie gei wo ni de guoqi?" He looks at me and says in perfect English, "what, you wanna borrow my flag?"... These people had special abacuses (abaci?) to shake around for cheering purposes. I wanted one, but never did find any for sale.... This guy just got gold.... And the crowd goes wild.... When I see cheerleaders and giant inflated freaky monsters I get some terrible ideas in my head...... It is clearly very difficult to walk in these suits.... Asian nations dominate the little but very strong guys contests.... Can you figure out what this is?... In another subway station we found one chained and locked shut. Which could be a very stupid situation if you actually needed to use the thing. "Oh no, only LXiao Wang has the key! He's at lunch right now!"............BOOM... American vs. China basketball at a sports bar. Everyone with a heart was rooting for China.... The National Agricultural Exhibition Hall, which has been rented by Heineken to open the "Holland Heiniken House", a good place to start the evening the source of most of my Olympic tickets thanks to the fact that I was staying with Harold, who happens to have a very useful Dutch passport.... That's the Heineken House mascot, and it actually manages to be creepier than the Beijing '08 mascots.... She got silver in judo.... That's the prince of Holland.... That's the prince of holland and his wife dancing around singing "we are the champions" (of course, being that Holland only got second that day, they really weren't the champions. I didn't tell that to the prince, however.)... Muchos billetos.... Olympic level badminton is actually a damned good spectator sport, I will have you know.... Slidy camera on a ceiling track....

These guys could be only 60 for all I know, considering what they must have gone through.... They're giving out (CCP-approved) bibles in the minority zoo's church.... Gosh! You're such a Hmoob!... Pagan dancing to balance things out.... WhatWhat a way to go.... An English fellow I came here with had made friends with a bunch of employees and this dinner ended up being completely paid for.... The minorities zoo had some kind of torch ceremony that I don't understand but don't need to understand since it was freaking cool.... I competed next. (I lost.)... Kunming University has a wicked nice campus.... Hey, look, Matt finally showed up.... We were missing the virgin party back at the hostel.... Who knew it would be cold at 3000 meters above sea level?... Nepali-Tibetan Aloo Ghobi amazingness.... Pork curry, with the Tibetan idea of pork being slices of pure fat, something that we'd have to deal with for the next few days.... Fried yak cheese balls with some kind of sweet milky sauce.... Not turds but more yak cheese.... Maayan bought some and it was kinda okay.... It started raining.... Maayan starts Patrik's cellphone holder.... Patrik is the world's tallest pretend Muslim Swede.... A lot more room for developement here!... Tashi's Guesthouse's welcoming commitee.... It was pouring and the ceiling leaked. I was too tired to complain so this was my solution. I was expecting to wake up to a whole bucketful of ceiling water cascading upon me, but it held up until we got up at 5:30am....

169 quality pictures of things: Getting off the buses and onto the boat.... A long way down.... Our boat for the next 2 days on the Yangtze.... Parked up against another boat somewhere along the Yangtze.... Coal barges.... They were on the loud speakers waking us up at 5:30 so we could see the first of the three gorges at 6:00. I don't know about you, but I don't need 30 minutes to step one meter outside my cabin...... Some city where we stopped while you could go (for extra money) to see the Little Three Gorges on a tributary river. We decided we were seeing enough gorges and opted out.... The citizens of this town must all have buns of steel.... Binocular vendors waiting to get you as you disembark through the next boat.... The asking price of binoculars dropped four-fold before my eyes.... Hella stairs. The elevators only run when there are enough people.... There weren't enough people at that time. It was very hot that day too. Fun times stair climbing.... "...and THAT rock looks like a dragon laughing..." I'm not making this up.... Rocks and trees, wow!... There was this really cute but very annoying kid whose favorite game was jumping in front of people trying to take pictures.... And I thought to boat we were on was kind of shitty.... At least the boat has its own garden.... I'm obsessed with hydrofoils... Coal being dropped onto a boat.... They woke us up early again.... I almost looked like floating portapotties but I think someone actually lives there.... That was a non-sequitor.... Oh, this floating theater points right at the beer billboard, now I get it.... I think the floating walkway was my favorite part of the whole tour.... The performance was, as you can see, very exciting....

82 quality pictures of things: Last night at Hopscotch in Dalian.... Nationalism wins all arguments.... Kind of makes me look like a nice guy. Weird.... Very normal interaction.... Breakfast in Chongqing.... Yangtze and new apartment blocks.... The banks of the Yangtze are very steep, so there are loads of funky funiculars to take you to your boat.... The Yangtze meets the Jialing River. The difference in color is surprising.... More funiculars.... It was hot and I was very hungry but it was surprisingly difficult to exchange money for food.... Income distribution at the Chongqing Urban Planning Museum.... "House of the Future" exhibits are rediculous no matter what time that future is supposed to be. This house of the future apparantly has a view over San Francisco despite being in Chongqing.... Touching Inquiry.... I don't know.... The future of Chongqing is robot racecar drivers.... Was it as sueper for you as it was for me?... Shelled building in the middle of Chongqing's bustling downtown.... When I get married that's the kinda wedding dress I plan to wear.... Liberation tower, or something like that.... Chongqing has lots of awesome steeply staired alleyways with crowded balconies and bad smells.... Which came first?... This cable car crosses the Yangtze. If it doesn't fall down half-way.... More interesting smells eminating from this holeintheground.... Kind of reminds me of Sao Paulo.... Chongqing looks far more impressive at night....

123 quality pictures of things: I climbed to the top floor of my building. They have it fenced off, but not very well! Here's elevator machinery. Quite cool to see up close.... I didn't touch anything.... Past those last buildings is the ocean.... The building's name, translated, would be Golden Earth Seascape, or something like that.... My school is just past the tall building with the bubble on top.... The park behind my house.... You can see here where I was taking the previous pictures from.... There's the sea-shell tower thing that Shinji and I hiked too in the previous gallery's pictures.... Heping Plaza, where lies my gym. 96 quality pictures of things: Clearly built long before everything thing else around it, the Hong Kong customs building from the Shenzhen (mainland China) side. I got in at 6:30 after a crowded, sleepless overnight train from Hunan, but had to wait three hours after my ATM card was promptly eaten by a machine, first for the bank to open, then to convince them to give me my card, which was surprisingly hard, even for China.... In the customs processing hall. In case you might change your mind at the last minute and find a trash can for your contraband, I suppose.... Checked into the Hotel, wandered around zombie-like looking for some lunch and astounded at how I was suddenly in a wholly and entirely different country.... Hong Kong streets are narrow and the subway entrances narrower yet. Such a contrast to Chinese municipalities, all moderninzed within the past 20 years, and bigbigbig.... People actually respect signs in Hong Kong. I told you it was a completely different country from mainland China.... Holy monkeys! Hagen Daas is all over mainland China and, when once bitching about Hagen Daas' horrible price-performance I started pining for some Ben & Jerry's. Low and behold, Hong Kong really has civilisation after all.... Hey, look who I found! This is after (some of us) had slept like logs, starting a new day at the Pacific Coffee co., popular with blantant touristists for the free internet.... Sweet tat bro.... Across the harbour, on Hong Kong island. All public transport is double decker, here are some iconic trolleys.... Ginormous aviary in Hong Kong Park.... Mommy was not actually angry.... Robotic death arm or telescopic window-washing platform? My guess is both.... There are so many one way streets I advice look BOTH WAYS. Up and down, to, perhaps. (In and out only if you have spare time for the existential.)... In the plan to ride DOWN the midlevels escelator, I happened to not consider is unidirectionality and the time of day... luckily mommy's knees held up.... Hong Kong really reminds me of San Francisco with taller buildings and even more Cantonese people.... Money is issued by all the banks. Here are six different HK$20 notes.... My father demanded a visit to the science museum.... Architecture at its phallickest.... The festival of lights or whatever they called it. Most big buildings shine lasers times to a score played from ferries' and harbor-side walkways' loud speakers. Absolutely absurd.... May Day, all the Southeast Asian domestic workers get the day off, ride the ferries en masse to Hong Kong island.... 124 quality pictures of things: Kung Pao Rabbit. Far too bony.... Sim's Cozy Guesthouse in Chendu's chef gives great cooking lessons.... Sichuan cuisine is all about flavor. YUMM.... Chop everything first. Today's dishes, from near to far: Kungpao Chicken, Spitofu, "fish-flavor" eggplant (no fish nor fish flavor involved at all), and sweet-and-sour pork.... Almost all Sichuan cooking is done with a large cleaver and a heavy wok as the only primary kitchenware.... Soon to be sweet-and-soured.... The master helped me at every step, but nevertheless these dishes were all cooked by me. I was very proud of myself, but had to share with Finnish people as it was far too much food for just me.... "Fish-flavor" eggplant.... Kungpao chicken.... Sweet-and-sour piggy.... Untranslatebly spicy tofu. I get all Pavlovian just looking at it.... Crazy old crazy man with a tiny room fool of dusty, disorganized Mao memorabilia, which is also clearly his house.... Adam West?... Pork skin, I think.... There's an old bomb-shelter in the park, it's been turned into a haunted-house.... -_-... It's pitch black without the flash. The flash takes away from the effect, but gives so much more in return.... Laundry day in Chengdu.... First make a pancake, then add an egg, spicy sauce, green onions. Next a crispy fried thingy for texture. Fold and delicious.... Finnish peeps I'd also run into way back in Xining.... Who's the lucky lady?... My Finnish companions told me it was much more fun with me there to explain what they were eating.... Chengdu attests that I should be in the subway building business in China.... Chengdu is also getting a faux-old-timey street.... That's the first modern sign I've seen to still have the old communist aesthetic. Most modern signs have cartoony things like Pandas....

259 quality pictures of things: Walking to the ferry terminal, snowy Seoraksan behind me.... Yumm.... Another Panamanian ship plying Korean waters.... Hoping not to have to ride in this thing in the North Pacific in February!... Yellow submarine.... I actually didn't really like this island that much, but this Korean guy wanted his picture taken and than INSISTED that he take one for me...... This pretty young Russian girl had a very, very emotional goodbye at the shoith her significant other, and then stood here waving at him for many minutes as the boat chugged away. It was cute.... I've seen Family Mart in North Korea, now I've also seen floating Family Mart.... North Korean patrol? Probably not, but that would be exciting.... Next morning, docked at Zarubino, just north of the North Korea-Russia border. The ferry was covered in frozen sea foam, which I thought was cool until I discovered that so where the precipitous metal stairs. Of course, after helping one on the nice ladies I met on the boat with her bag of bowling balls and bricks (I'm assuming), two more nice old Russian ladies imposed one me as well. After the third trip up and down I grabbed my own bag and made a break for it before anyone else got any ideas.... The bus to Vladivostok. From here it's still five hours down mostly frozen, unpaved roads.... Old Vladivostok, just down the road from Oleg's flat. Since I still no more than about 1USD in Rubles we were off to get money changed.... Katya and Katya. Katya one is Oleg's friend, Katya 2 is Katya 1's friend, doesn't know Oleg, and even less knew me. These girls met me at the bus station, paid for the cab, and helped me with everything I needed just because they are awesome.... Office building of the provincial government of Far Eastern Province.... Harold is getting off that train, having come overland from Harbin.... 6ish the next morning, on the way to the Airport.... I liked all the unfamiliar Russian airplanes, but even more I liked this lady's coat.... That's Siberan Airlines, in case you're illiterate (I used thef up my own cyrillic.... I think this is my favorite airport ever. The migs in snow-covered camouflaged hangars along the runway helped.... Also, stray dogs. I'd like to see what Homeland Security would do to a dog with the nerve to run around an airport.... The luggage delivery system was a dude outside throwing bags onto the small conveyor belt inside.... Two from Harold's right is Dasha, our amazing schoolmate who made this trip possible.... In our new friend's hand there is a bottle of Parliament vodka. I do not recall which bottle that was in that evening's long sequence thereof.... They all dance like Gene. Now it all makes sense.... Apartment hunting I took lots of photos of each place, I'm only posting the one I chose.... In China it is expected that the mover-inner must do the cleaning... you just have to get used to that. Be glad I didn\'t take any pictures of the \'toilet\' at this place!... I spent the rest of the daylight hours sitting in the front of the bus rather than my upper, middle, windlowless birth. This meant sucking in the drivers\' second-hand cigarette smoke, but enjoying the view.... Wayne is still happy. Too bad I don\'t have a picture of his expression at 5am when we arrived in Yushu!... If only this tunnel was completed: on the way back this pass had a foot of snow, and the bus was sliding around between overturned trucks. Scary.... 4200 meters = 13,780 feet... Pee break in the evening snow.... I didn\'t realize that guy was still peeing...... The moonscape ahead.... Yushu, after getting in at 5am and getting some hours of real sleep in a bed.... Mongolian star chart, duh.... I have never seen Mongolian and Sankrit carved on the same stone before.... He filled these metal thingees with incense, sandal wood, little rocks, some coins, and who knows what else.... Prayer wheel.... I wonder what he was listening to.... The fifth script of the day, after Chinese, Mongolian, and Roman. Cool.... If this fountain had gone off all of a sudden, that could have been fun.... I avoided paying the entrace fee and went for a hike across the river.... Broken down - they used to do rides out onto the sand dunes in it. 88 quality pictures of things: Back in Beijing, this time with Shinji in tow.... This advertisement for an English school just speaks on so many levels.... : )... Don\'t be these things in the summer palace. Freaking killjoys.... Shinji got very sick.... I didn\'t know what I ordered but it was gross.... I told Shinji I hated flowers and that\'s why I take pictures of them. She believed me.... -_-... The Dowager\'s famous marble boat. Pretty meh but you gotta see it.... Best breakfast since Lone Pine.... Although I did have to ask for them to bring out some extra cinnamon.... We hung around for and hour after breakfast on the phone with the travel agent for Shinji\'s flight back to Dalian. Enough time for me to get hungry again and order a burger!... Qipao shopping. Koreans are too polite to bargain well, so I did it for her. Got the price down by about 78%.... What a bunch of tools.... Countdown.... Buying a ticket to inner Mongolia at Beijing Station.... Beihai park has hundreds of cats running around at night. Shinji is neurotically scared of cats so I was constantly very amused.... Crazy big model of Beijing. But, very friendly, if entirely unintelligible. The family here feeds his and gives him lots of beer.... Cool little hidey-hole in the stone terracing.... Still some ice up here.... Would have been tasty if there was any meat on them! And yes, I do have a reputation to maintain, I ate all five brains.... If this Wall is so Great, why the metal fence and the keep out sign?... 121 quality pictures of things: In case you can\'t read that, it says Yantai <-> Dalian. The rest of the boat was just about as faded as the sign.... Young Matthew embarks.... Chris is very excited about the seven-hour boat journey ahead of us.... Harold gets ready to capture every detail.... Patrick and Matthew settle in for the ride.... Ben was born settled in.... This boat, one gathers, once plied the waters between Honshu and Hokkaido. I love that its new Chinese owners, if perhaps not keeping up the boat to Japanese standards of cleanliness [understatement], kept up the awesome odd mid-eighties Japanese advertisements. Look at the high-res of this one, consider the assortment of costumed white folk involved, and consider this is very much pre-Photoshop.... The restaurant was the only place on the boat that did not literally smell like feces. Instead it smelled like over-ripe ex-sealife. We nabbed a table and played poker, using bits of ripped up paper as chips. (We tried to get some coins but were rebuked with \'there\'s no bank on this boat!\'...)... In Yantai, whilst wandering along looking for a hotel, we found the scariest Santa ever.... Looking for breakfast, finding squiggly ocean bits.... The entire commerce of this part of town appears to be the selling of mobile phones.... This guy\'s fish not yet being dead, every few paces a fish would flop out onto the side walk. He\'d put down the whole contraption, pick up the fish, put it back in the basket, and then pick it up and keep on going until the next one flopped out a few paces later.... Three hours on the bus later and here we are, Qingdao.... My mouth waters just looking at it.... My mouth no longer waters. And to think Patrick really thought they would bring him ONE cooked sea penis rather than a whole dish of the things.... If you think these are ugly now, don\'t try and see how the look still alive!... Not much better with plum sauce?... Chris had to try one once I got around to eating one too.... These next few pictures were taken by a bored bar tender who had only a short while before almost kicked us out of the bar for bringing in our own bottle of cola. And then his boss left...... This lady is the singer of the famous Jeongseon Arirang. If you knew about Arirang you would understand.... Caffe Themselves as seen from the movie theater lobby where I watched (and mostly understood) my first big-screen Korean movie. It was about ghosts. And love. Love and ghosts. Etc.... Hanoi. 1946 is like our 1776; declared but not yet real independence.... This is Bia Hoi. It\'s locally and freshly brewed weak, cheap, and tasty beer popular all over Vietnam.... This is Jaesun. We made friends at the airport. she was spending a long weekend on Vietnam on her own and had the same itinerary for those days as I had.... Unlike Korea, people seem to like cats in Vietnam. (Although I was told it\'s not unheard of to eat them too...)... Modern socialism\'s voting maching: the ATM.... Waiting in line to see Uncle Ho (Chi Minh, that is). He looked a lot less waxy than Mao.... It was a long, sunny line and I am ever bald. So I bought a silly hat.... Uncle Ho\'s modest office in his stilt house.... My first of many bowls of Pho.... Recreated socialist supply store. This museum was surprisingly upfront about how much the planned economy sucked.... Traditional communal long house.... I like it cuz it looks like a boat.... Most of them took off while ours waited as they went to the police station and registered a British guy who, never having been properly advised that it was necessary, didn\'t bring his passport. The economy might be reforming, but the bureaucracy is not!... Rowdy Irish lasses.... Next morning after a night train to Sapa, in the mountains near the Chinese border.... Baby birds.... The bones aren\'t developed enough to be crunchy so one just eats the whole thing.... Someone turned this guy over so he could fly away. 112 quality pictures of things: June in Gohan...... Hail!... ...this storm knocked the power out, but not for too long.... Pretty good size little ice balls.... Someone was shooting flares out over the East Sea as we drove North up the coast.... Waiting for South Korean immigration to open.... Still waiting.... Went for a wander.... This is one of the two trains that just made world news with its test run across the DMZ. The destination sign says Geumgangsan (mountain), making it pretty clear what they intend to do with this train. In fact, on the other side there is a brand new train station, looking like it was built with plenty of help from the South Koreans. I was not allowed to take a picture of it.... Cheolma (the iron horse) wants to run!... Huge, unused parking lot with bus-sized lines. One assumes to park the busses once train service is implemented.... And here we are in Hyundai\'s little colony.... Clouds looking ominous and some South Koreans disembarking.... \'Onjonggak\' is the name of the North Korean town we could almost see the dark grey roofs of across the river.... North Korean roofs. This is the only shot of North Korean soldiers I chanced because, tellingly, here it wasn\'t in our direction they were watching.... Wait, is the behind the South Korean bank branch that I can see the North Korean roofs? So surreal.... Let\'s hope those aren\'t missile trajectories!... This says that the Great Leader Kim Il-sung gave taught of the period of reunification at this place on August 19th, 1973.... We finally hit the trail, almost 2 hours behind schedule - delays at the boder.... \'Samnoksu (spring) By the Great Leader Kim Il-sung\'s proclamation, minerals and wild ginseng are diffused in this water, and so he named it \'Samnoksu\'.... I can hardly even read that one. It\'s about Kim I rather than Kim II, that\'s all you need to know.... Too long to translate, but it doesn\'t seem to be about Kim I or II, strangely enough.... The first suggestion I heard was a frog carrying its young. The second was frogs screwing. While I\'m not so ignorant of the amphibian life cycle as those observers, I admit I have no idea why one frog would ride another. Fun and games??... Water slide?... More frogs and the first piece of litter I\'d seen so far. (There was fresh litter later, after the South Korean scout troops had been through.)...

153 quality pictures of things: Hen helped me clear a cutty-ass running trail in the local montañas.... I couldn\'t break this branch, so I weighed it down with stones. It\'s still held down now, more than weeks later!... We would have died in the stone age by now.... Spring is perty.... They\'ve been running the gondola in the late afternoon/early evening up to the rotation restaurant.... The High1 Country Club. Pretty clear day.... Right at the edge the gondola gets low enough that if you really, really wanted to, you could probably grab on.... But, you would very quickly find yourself hanging several hundred feet off the ground...... Ohemgee what the...? This wasn\'t here before.... There are holes in the ground lining the trail above that boardwalk, suggesting they plan to continue it over this part of the trail.... Mysterious red goop?... view from Beageun Mt.... Wait a minute... this big wooden platform was also very much not here before!... The board walk leads to the top of one of the High1 chair lifts (Victoria). I guess they\'re trying to diversify their attractions?... There are workers down there workering. They didn\'t want me to take a picture of them. And they made us turn around.... Snowboard gear for the middle and highschool boys\' ski team.... Earthquake and fire safety drill.... Sweet. We didn\'t get to do this when I was in school....
